These days the general public takes privacy of data very seriously. People take precautions such as installing internet security on personal computers to stop hackers accessing data on their desktop, and other preventative measures. Therefore, organisations who lose or expose the provate data of customers should be held accountable. In most countries around the world there are privacy laws, but such laws often do not have enforcement guidelines. There are no fines, jail sentences or "naming and shaming" requirements for companies who deliberately, or negligently lose the private data of customers and members. In the UK the Information Commissioner's Office has called for knowingly or recklessly breaching that country's privacy laws to be a criminal offence. Well and good, but punishment needs to be meted out to make sure the offenders take it seriously.
