I'm trying to get my mother to use internet banking. She refuses, citing the potential security issues, such as hackers. She's no luddite, but not exactly a computer guru either. The media does a great job of alerting people to the dangers that can be associated with online transactions, but they don't share the news that banks and shops spend millions of dollars securing their services. Certainly no site could (or should) claim they are 100% secure, so internet users should continue to surf only when protected by internet security (and of course I recommend ZoneAlarm). Banks are more secure than social networking though, because they implement systems to look for fraud in real time. But remember, you can never have too much security and you should never rely on some bank website to secure your PC - ensure you're protected against hackers, viruses and so on.
