In a recent study by the British Office of Fair Trading nearly a third of all British retail websites were in breach of at least one aspect of British legislation designed to protect consumers. This compares unfavourably with Australia, whose retail websites are much better at compliance with consumer protection laws. There were however a large number of Australian etailers who made small breaches of the laws, predominantly through incorrect advice to possible purchasers. Australia's re-eminent consumer watchdog, the ACCC has demanded changes to the offending websites. The British Office of Fair Trading found about 40% of websites misled on pricing by sneaking in additional charges at the checkout without making them obvious. More problems were found on auction websites than traditional online shops.
