It seems that the average home computer user might give more value to protecting personal data than what the UK Government does. Despite being bound by the Data Protection Act which covers how governement entities should handle the personal information of citizens, a number of UK government departments had no policy for dealing with and protecting against data theft and integrity, depsite many very public examples of such incidences occurring. Many home internet users have been alerted to the potential of scammers and hackers stealing personal data and have taken steps (namely installing security software) to prevent such theft taking place. The UK government has been shown to fall down in a number of areas, including error correcting, auditing, policy creation and implementation and reporting on a regular basis.
