Further to yesterday's piece on "Crimeware as a service"... we had some feedback from people wanting to know more about the way the operation might work. Not being in the crime world myself, the following is supposition, but is clearly reported on sites all over the internet. Basically, there are criminal organisations who are prepared to rent out their hacking skills, making it cheaper and easier for other crime gangs to start hacking computers - typically unprotected home computers. Special software "kits" can be rented which allow "untraceable" hacking techniques, a special system to monitor hacking affiliation networks to view the rate of progress of hackers. Servers and bandwidth can also be rented for sending spam. Allegedly some Russian hackers are paid only a few dollars a day to perform the tasks. So, the moral of the story is to install your ZoneAlarm Internet Security, and keep it updated!
