If you've seen the movie "Die Hard 4" then you would have heard about Zero Day. This is, in effect, when a computerised attack reduces the world's entire collection of electronic goods to a pile of plastic and glass unable to be used for anything other than boat-anchors. Obviously such an act would be carried out by hackers or some criminal element. But rumour has it that the NSA is developing something more powerful than anything that is thought to be in the hands of hackers. So what does this mean? Basically the NSA is spending its time writing viruses and related technologies in order to pre-empt how attacks might occur. But is this the right course of action to take? Internet Security software has for many years worked on "patterns" to detect what may be a virus. Essentially that means the software searches for new and as yet undetected viruses by studying patterns of code to see if that code is suspicious, or written in a way that might constitute virus behaviour.
