The majority of internet users don't knowingly surf on virus and malware infected sites, but unfortunately the biggest risk comes not from overtly fraudulent sites but legitimate sites that have been unknowingly hijacked and had malware loaded, ready to be installed on web surfers as they stop by for a browse and a click. When the web surfer clicks on links or images they inadvertently activate what is known as a drive by download - malware installs itself on the PC and they then have a computer that is infected and ready to send back personal information to the the person who created the software. Or, they might be infected with a tiny piece of software that turns the PC into a spam robot, using the internet connection to send thousands of emails without their knowledge or consent.
