After a data breach the University of Virginia compromised names and social security numbers, a professor of microchemistry and molecular genetics had his identity and $22,000 stolen. Despite not ever requesting to have his credit limit increased, the professor received a letter from his bank notifying him that his request had been denied. Realizing that someone else must have had access to his credit card details, he soon discovered the true extent of the theft. Thieves used his personal information to open bank accounts in New York which they then linked to his existing credit card account. After accessing the details they were able to drain the credit account with cash advance payments which were withdrawn from an ATM. very quickly more than $22,000 had been withdrawn from the credit card account.
