Yahoo! has filed a lawsuit in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York City against an unknown group for allegedly spamming a group of email recipients, claiming they had won a prize from Yahoo! The lawsuit, under the Federal Trademark Act and the CAN-SPAM Act alleges that the unsolicited emails were deliberately branded Yahoo! and indicated that the recipient had won a prize from Yahoo!, which has more than 260million people world-wide using its email service. It is thought that the emails were a form of a phishing attack which try to lure unsuspecting email recipients into giving their personal details to claim the non-existent prize. It is quite common for banks and financial institutions to be used for phishing attacks, and the Yahoo! case follows on from eBay, PayPal and other major internet companies being mimicked.
