China earthquake hacker jailed
01, August 2008
A Chinese man who hacked into a Red Cross website after the Sichuan earthquakes has been convicted, and jailed for two years. The hacking, which was part of a money-making scam involved the man breaking into a website and then trying to divert donations to the relief effort to his own bank account.
The convicted hacker managed to use a stolen copy of the details needed to log into the Red Cross, then posted a fake notice urging people to make "relief" donations into his own account. With more than 70,000 left dead after the earthquake, the theft is seen as a particularly callous act.
No donations made it to his account as the operation was shut down before money was transferred.
