Shred, shred and shred it again
27, July 2008
It seems that large American companies aren't shredding confidential data to a level that's deemed acceptable.
A recent study by Iron Mountain security has profiled companies with revenues of more than $750million and investigated the way they handle internal and customer data. Despite a recent uplift in the money and time spent on making data safer, many large companies aren't treating "old" data correctly, leaving themselves open to large fines from the government and also to identity theft and fraud.
An important piece of US government legislation requires companies to properly dispose of documents that contain consumer information through methods such as burning, pulverizing or shredding to an extent where the data can not be recovered.
It is expected the federal government will soon crack down on data disposal methods and this will more than likely include data held digitally.
