Tennessee students' detail posted online
04, August 2008
The Social Security details of more than 5,000 Tennessee school students were posted on a private website. School administrators have taken action to warn the parents of the students on how to access the services of an identity theft protection company.
The school is under discussion with that company to offer parents of the affected children credit fraud alerts and identity theft protection.
The cost might be $100,000.
Such a breach of privacy is deemed so serious it has to be reported to the US Department of Education and it might result in the school being denied federal funds, despite there being no precedent for this strategy. It does, however, show how serious data protection and anti-fraud can be.
