Although the internet was conceptualized by the West, its problems are not exclusive to that region. In Saudi Arabia, a man was fined SR50,000, and sentenced to “22 months in jail and 200 lashes for breaking into an e-mail account of a young woman and getting personal photos of her”. Interestingly enough, the motive for this particular act of cyber crime isn’t monetary. The man threatened to disseminate the photos of the woman (none of which were considered indecent or prurient) online, if she did not have an affair with him. It seems that personal information stolen from the internet can be used to blackmail anyone for just about anything these days. This makes financially motivated cyber crimes look like petty theft.
